Avoiding Rush Hour Crashes

While sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic, it can be easy to become jealous of George Jetson. With his futuristic flying car, he never had to worry about rush hour traffic. And to be honest, it is a little disappointing that we are not further along in this area. It is the 21st century! We should all have flying cars by now. Sadly, there is no indication that flying cars will be a viable option for the daily commute any time soon. In the meantime, there are some things you can do to avoid accidents and keep your commute from becoming even worse.
With the high concentration of drivers on the road, rush hour can be one of the most dangerous times to drive. Slower traffic can lead to frustrated drivers making risky maneuvers in tight quarters in an effort to shave a little time off of their drive home. This can lead to car crashes that slow traffic down even more. To avoid becoming part of the problem during rush hour, here are some tricks to keep you out of collisions.

Plan Ahead

You know the traffic patterns in your area, and if you can leave a little earlier or later to avoid the heaviest traffic time, that can help. If not, just plan for the traffic delay and allow yourself plenty of time to get to your next destination.

Pay Attention

It can be easy to get distracted when traffic is moving slow. Texting, talking on the phone, putting on make-up, or adjusting the radio can pull your attention away from the road just long enough for the traffic pattern to change. Rather than just watching the car in front of you, try to look ahead further and anticipate when traffic is slowing down.

Watch out for Crazies

Heavy traffic can sometimes turn completely normal people into lunatics on the road. Frustrated drivers can make aggressive moves, often cutting off or tailgating other drivers. In such a congested area, this can be quite dangerous. If you see someone driving wildly, give him space, and let him in front of you if necessary.

Mind Your Manners

In other words, don’t be one of the crazies! Try to avoid unnecessary lane changes, use your turn signal, and try to maintain a safe distance of a couple of car lengths to account for sudden stops in traffic flow. If you follow these simple guidelines, you might not fly home, but you can at least avoid the crash and burn.
